Nikki & James: A Golden Summer Wedding at The Epicurean

There’s a particular kind of light you only get on the Mornington Peninsula in the middle of summer — warm, low, and a little bit lazy, like it knows it has all evening to get where it’s going. It’s the kind of light that made Nikki and James’s wedding day feel less like an event and more like a scene we all got to step inside for a few hours.

Their day began the traditional way, with a Greek Orthodox ceremony that carried all the warmth, ritual, and quiet emotion this culture does so beautifully. Crowns exchanged, candles lit, a whole church of family standing witness — there’s something about a Greek ceremony that reminds you weddings were never meant to be small, quiet things. They’re meant to be full: full of voices, full of blessings, full of people who’ve been waiting years to see this exact moment happen.

From there, the day moved out to Red Hill and into the golden hinterland surrounds of The Epicurean — and honestly, this is where the afternoon really opened up.

If you haven’t been, The Epicurean is one of those rare venues that does the hard work for you. Housed in Red Hill’s old Cool Stores, it’s all exposed timber beams, red brick, and soaring glass-topped ceilings, with a kind of easy industrial elegance that photographs beautifully in any light. But in summer, with the doors thrown open to the hinterland and Port Phillip Bay shimmering somewhere in the distance, it becomes something else entirely. Guests spilled out onto the grounds with drinks in hand, the vineyard-dotted hills rolling out behind them, and for a good hour before dinner was called, nobody wanted to be anywhere else.

We timed portraits for the last light of the evening — that stretch photographers quietly live for — and Nikki and James gave us everything: laughter, a stolen kiss against the timber beams, a walk out toward the hills where the sky went the colour of rosé. It’s a reminder of something I say to every couple I work with: the best photos rarely happen because they’re staged. They happen because two people are genuinely enjoying each other, and the location simply gets out of the way and lets that happen.

Inside, The Epicurean’s rustic, produce-driven menu did exactly what good wedding food should do — it got people talking, sharing, and relaxing into the night. Speeches were short and sweet, the dance floor opened early, and by the time the fairy lights took over from the sunset, it felt like the whole room had been friends for years.

Days like Nikki and James’s are exactly why I love what I do. A ceremony steeped in tradition, a reception that leans into the golden hour views of Red Hill, and a couple who simply let the day carry them. That’s the kind of wedding we live for at Blossom.
