Every couple who comes to us has a different idea of what makes a wedding day feel like theirs. For some it’s the dress, for others it’s the dancing, and for some it’s the details nobody else would even think to plan for. Emma and Aaron fell firmly into that last camp — and honestly, it made for one of the most exciting days we’ve had the privilege of capturing.

From our very first conversation, it was clear food wasn’t just going to be a part of their day — it was going to be the story of their day. Emma and Aaron wanted their guests to feel like they’d walked into a genuine dining experience, not just a wedding reception with good catering. So instead of the usual single reveal, they invested in something we don’t get to do nearly often enough: a fully staged, three-act evening inside The Epicurean.

The day began at The Cambium, tucked into Red Hill’s quiet bushland, where the ceremony had all the softness of a private garden gathering — just family, fig trees, and a couple who clearly couldn’t stop smiling at each other. From there, everyone made the short move to The Epicurean, where the real transformation was waiting.

For the grazing hour, the venue’s main dining space was completely draped off — hidden from guests entirely. Instead, everyone spilled into a separate area of the venue for canapés and cocktails, with no idea what was happening just metres away behind the curtains. It’s the kind of styling choice that takes real trust in your vendors, because you’re essentially asking your guests to wait for a moment you haven’t shown them yet.

And then came the reveal.

As dinner service approached, the drapes were pulled back, and the main room opened up in front of everyone at once — tables set, lighting warmed, the whole space transformed into its final form. Gasps, phones out, guests turning to each other — it’s rare to get an authentic, unscripted reaction shot from an entire room at once, but that’s exactly what this moment gave us. As photographers, days like this are a gift. You’re not just shooting portraits and details, you’re capturing genuine surprise on forty or fifty faces simultaneously. It’s a perfect example of what we mean when we say your wedding day should be built entirely around what you want, not what’s expected. Emma and Aaron didn’t want more flowers or a bigger dance floor — they wanted their guests to feel the anticipation of a really good meal building all evening, and then hand them the payoff all at once. It was theatrical, it was generous, and it was completely, unmistakably them.
